In this hands-on introductory work shop, students will create a mosaic art piece and in the process learn the basics of creating Mixed-Media mosaics using the Direct Method.
Included in this workshop will be:
1.) a brief history of the medium and techniques of mosaics in general with a focus on applications of Mixed Media mosaics in particular.
2.) design considerations and parameters for Mixed Media mosaics including basic color theory, type, shape and thickness of tesserae, traditional opus, and andamento, with a strong focus on identifying and effectively combining disparate materials (metals, glass, wood, paper, plastics, etc.) to insure aesthetics and basic physio-chemical compatibility of materials for structural soundness and longevity of work.
3.) evaluation and preparation of substrate and tessera materials
4.) discussion of various adhesives and glues
5.) instruction and practice in using cutting tools, as well as safety practices in the mosaic studio
6.) information about, and practical application of, grouts
7.) options for finishing touches such as sealing, framing and hanging for dispaly
Most supplies and some materials are provided for use in the studio during class including glues, adhesives, thin set and grout in basic colors (white, charcoal and brown); safety equipment (goggles, masks and gloves); a limited assortment of materials for making tesserae; 12" x 12" x 1/4" MDF substrate for creating mosaic unless the student wishes to bring their own suitable small substrate (such as a pot, picture frame or mirror) please contact me in advance. Participants are encouraged to bring any old plates, dishware, tiles, beads, glass gems, or other bits of stuff, they might want to use, (or have available to give to someone else to use!) in their mosaic project. A list of contacts for purchasing supplies, materials and equipment will be provided and students will have an opportunity to purchase their own set of wheeled nippers for cutting at the first class if they wish to work on projects at home.
Please dress in comfortable work clothes (fun mosaics can be messy!). If you are participating in a Weekend Intensive Workshop, lunch and tea will be provided to you by
