MDF cut to shape
1/4" 'environmental' MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a composite material created from left over post - production wood byproducts mixed with a non-toxic binder (basically sawdust and glue). It was used as the substrate for this project because it is relatively light, fairly rigid and can readily be cut into any desired shape. In this case, it was cut into a custom drawn heart shape using a jig saw and then the shape was sanded and sealed with several PVA coatings in preparation for laying the tesserae. In order to make a substrate base that is suitable for working with thinset and grout, MDF must be thoroughly sealed before laying tesserae.
